It's been confirmed to be a ball. That likely means no hip-hoppity, swiggity swooty, but I'm not in charge. Considering this IS a military academy, everybody unspokenly agreed dress seems to be black tie, and plays host to some of the most illustrious citizens in the galaxy; it's probably going to be a very formal, scheduled event.
Thus I propose the following order of events:
Roll Call/Announcements-approximately one hour of guests arriving, and being announced is what you would expect. This greeting time is typically used for attendees to identify and make an impression upon important figures they would like to socialize with, for one reason or another. An announcer is usually appointed shouting titles and names, so we'd probably just introduce ourselves via an uncontrolled npc.
Afterwards is the main ceremony, a speech by the host/hostess that is ended with a toast, and begins the actual ball with the first dance. Honored guests, notable events, and are also usually mentioned here.
Thus the ball commences, usually with several live musicians, performers of special talents, and a central dance hall with all the seats and food. Beyond the main dance hall there are usually servants, probably student volunteers, serving smaller appetizers for those exploring the school and its art or the aforementioned performers.
This WOULD technically leave room for an area where people are hilariously clubbing in black tie...
